How to Set Up a WiFi Range Extender (Complete Guide)

Step-by-step instructions for any brand, plus dedicated setup help for Netgear, TP-Link, and Linksys range extenders.

A WiFi range extender (also called a repeater or booster) receives your router's wireless signal and rebroadcasts it farther into your home. When set up correctly, it fills dead zones without replacing your router. This guide walks through universal setup steps, then brand-specific tips for three of the most common manufacturers.

How to Set Up a WiFi Range Extender

Most extenders follow the same basic process. Allow 15–20 minutes for your first setup.

Step 1: Unbox and record default settings

Step 2: Choose a setup method

You can connect the extender to your router using one of these methods:

Step 3: Link to your home network

  1. On a phone or laptop, connect to the extender's setup network if prompted.
  2. Open the setup page or app and choose your main router's WiFi name (SSID).
  3. Enter your router's WiFi password exactly (case-sensitive).
  4. Wait for the extender to reboot; status LEDs should show a successful link (often solid green or blue).

Step 4: Relocate for best coverage

Move the extender to a spot about halfway between your router and the weak-signal area. It must still receive a strong signal from the router—if the extender is too far from the router, the extended network will be weak too.

Placement tip: Use your phone's WiFi signal meter while walking from the router toward the dead zone. Install the extender where you still have at least two bars of router signal.

Step 5: Connect your devices

Join the extended network (same name as your router with _EXT suffix on some models, or the same SSID on mesh-style extenders). Test streaming or browsing in the area that previously had poor coverage.

Netgear WiFi Extender Setup

Netgear extenders (EX series, Nighthawk mesh extenders) typically use the Netgear Nighthawk app or a browser at mywifiext.net or www.mywifiext.net.

Netgear setup steps

  1. Plug in the extender near the router. Power LED should light.
  2. On a mobile device, download Nighthawk (iOS/Android) or connect to the extender's default WiFi (e.g. NETGEAR_EXT).
  3. Launch the app or open mywifiext.net in a browser. Create or log in to a Netgear account if asked.
  4. Select New Extender Setup and choose your router's 2.4 GHz and/or 5 GHz network.
  5. Enter your router WiFi password. The extender may suggest new extended network names—you can keep defaults or match your main SSID.
  6. After reboot, move the extender to the desired location. The Router Link LED should be green or amber (amber means move closer to the router).

Common Netgear URLs: mywifiext.net, 192.168.1.250. If the page does not load, try connecting directly to NETGEAR_EXT WiFi first.

TP-Link RE series and AX extenders often use TP-Link Tether or the web interface at tplinkrepeater.net or tplinkextender.net.

TP-Link setup steps

  1. Plug the extender into an outlet near the router.
  2. Connect your phone to the extender's default network (e.g. TP-Link_Extender or TP-LINK_Extender_XXXX).
  3. Open a browser and go to tplinkrepeater.net or http://192.168.0.254. Set an admin password when prompted.
  4. Run the Quick Setup wizard. Select your region and let the extender scan for networks.
  5. Choose your host router's WiFi name, enter the password, and confirm extended SSIDs for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz if applicable.
  6. Review settings and finish. Relocate the unit; the signal LED or RE light should show good signal to the router.

Alternatively, use the Tether app: add device → Range Extender → follow on-screen pairing.

Linksys Range Extender Setup

Linksys RE and Velop extenders may use the Linksys app or a browser setup at extender.linksys.com.

Linksys setup steps

  1. Place the extender near the router and power it on.
  2. Connect to the extender's setup WiFi (check the quick start guide for the exact name).
  3. Open extender.linksys.com or the IP listed on the device (often 192.168.1.1).
  4. Accept terms, then choose As a wireless range extender (not access point, unless you use Ethernet backhaul).
  5. Select your home WiFi network from the list and enter the network password.
  6. Configure extended network names if offered, save settings, and wait for reboot.
  7. Move the extender to the target area; confirm the spot finder or signal LED indicates a good link to the router.

After Setup: Verify Coverage
